Much of my work is related to physical health – addressing thyroid, adrenal and hormone imbalances, and sources of inflammation. But I don’t just treat the physical person in front of me – equally important is a client’s emotional and spiritual health.

So far in 2018, I’ve noticed a jump in the need for emotional support.

In some cases, clients just need someone to talk to, a safe and trusted professional they can confide in. I’m happy to provide some of that support, but I’m not a licensed mental health therapist or counselor. (Patients new to holistic health are often pleasantly surprised to learn that emotional support is one of the three pillars of health that I focus on). Of course, I have a list of mental health professionals I can refer to if dealing with severe depression, addiction or other serious mental illness.

Beyond talking, here are three of my go-to treatments for helping clients find emotional balance:

MEDITATION

Meditation is one of the easiest and most accessible methods that can calm tumultuous emotions. Even just five minutes a day can have a tremendous impact on well-being. Meditation is one of the best medicines for our moods, physical pain and mental function. There are lots of guided meditations, apps, and local events available. Click here for more information.

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (EFT)

Emotional freedom technique, also called tapping, is an acupressure technique used to optimize emotional health. Emotions are carried in certain parts of the body, and this technique can unleash the body’s own healing powers. Among many other benefits, tapping can help to remove negative emotions and calm anxiety.

ENERGY WORK

The field of energy work is very broad, and includes many practices including Reiki, shamanic healing, sound healing, reflexology, chakra healing, and healing touch therapy. These sessions can calm anxious thoughts and relieve stress, and there are many incredible practitioners in the Des Moines area.

Have you tried any of these emotional support therapies? What was your experience? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
